Solvent vs solventless concentrates

Solvent-based concentrates — shatter, budder, live resin, distillate — use butane, propane or ethanol to strip cannabinoids and terpenes from the plant, then purge the solvent off under vacuum. They are efficient, potent and consistent, and account for most of what you’ll see on this shelf. Solventless concentrates — rosin, hash, kief, bubble hash — use heat, pressure, ice water or agitation instead of solvents. They’re usually more expensive per gram and often more flavourful because nothing has been stripped out that wasn’t physically separated.

Shatter, live resin, hash and rosin

Shatter is the classic Canadian concentrate — hard, translucent, brittle, easy to work with and typically 70–90% THC. Live resin is made from flash-frozen fresh flower so it carries a more three-dimensional terpene profile straight from the plant. Hash is the oldest concentrate on Earth — pressed resin glands with a warm, earthy flavour that many long-time smokers prefer to any modern extract. Kief, wax, budder and diamonds

Kief is the loose trichome dust you can dust on top of a bowl of flower or twist into a joint — the easiest entry point to concentrates. Wax and budder are creamier textures of BHO with similar potency to shatter but a softer consistency that’s easier to scoop. Dosing concentrates

The single biggest mistake with concentrates is starting too big. A grain-of-rice-sized dab from an 80% THC live resin is a meaningful dose.
